HTC Mondrian render teases AT&T U-verse Mobile for Windows Phone 7, looks fatter than last time

Not that the connection between AT&T and HTC's Mondrian WP7 handset was under much doubt anymore, but here's the first image purporting to show the carrier-branded version of the device. The render is provided by 911sniper, whose long and distinguished record of leaking legit HTC ROMs leads us to believe it is indeed the real deal. It's curious then to juxtapose the somewhat bulky Mondrian on show here against the press imagery recently unearthed by BestBoyZ -- are we still looking at the same device? Our eyeball geometry would suggest not. Anyway, there's not too long left to go until Microsoft tidies this alphabet soup of codenames up for us, and until then we suggest just enjoying that tantalizing tile titled AT&T U-verse Mobile.

AT&T U-verse customers can use Xbox 360 as a set-top box starting November 7th

If you'd given up hope of using your 360 to watch AT&T U-Verse after over three years of waiting, we wouldn't think any less of you; but for those still holding on to the dream of one less set-top box under the TV, this latest tip says the wait is all but over. As you can see from the internal memo above, a so-called Wired Release will roll out to AT&T U-Verse customers next Sunday, and it'll bring the long awaited feature with it (though you'll have to wait until November 7th for that particular aspect). This means AT&T U-verse customer's Xbox 360 will have a Dashboard app, and when launched, it'll let it function exactly like any other U-verse set-top. The only major catch is that it can't be the only set-top -- you'll need at least one DVR at another TV in the house to enjoy one of the four HD streams that could be funneled into your home. But hey, at least it's on the way, right?

Update: A second anonymous tipster has chimed in with some interesting slides -- looks like your Xbox will need a hard drive! Gallery: Xbox 360 as AT&T U-Verse IPTV receiver, leaked guide

Berkeley Bionics reveals eLEGS exoskeleton, aims to help paraplegics walk in 2011 (update: eyes-on and video)

Wondering where you've heard of Berkeley Bionics before? These are the same whiz-kids who produced the HULC exoskeleton in mid-2008, and now they're back with a far more ambitious effort. Announced just moments ago in San Francisco, the eLEGS exoskeleton is a bionic device engineered to help paraplegics stand up and walk on their own. It's hailed as a "wearable, artificially intelligent, bionic device," and it's expected to help out within the hospital, at home and elsewhere in this wild, wild place we call Earth. Initially, the device will be offered to rehabilitation centers for use under medical supervision, and can be adjusted to fit most people between 5'2" and 6'4" (and weighing 220 pounds or less) in a matter of minutes. We're told that the device provides "unprecedented knee flexion," and it's also fairly quiet in operation; under ideal circumstances, speeds of up to 2MPH can be attained, and it employs a gesture-based human-machine interface that relies on legions of sensors to determine a user's intentions and act accordingly. Clinical trials are going on as we speak about to begin, and there's a limited release planned for the second half of 2011. We're still waiting to hear back on a price, so keep it locked for more as we get it live from the event.

Update: We just got to see the eLEGS walk across stage, and you'll find a gallery full of close-up pics immediately below. We also spoke to Berkeley Bionics CEO Eythor Bender, who detailed the system a bit more -- it's presently made of steel and carbon fiber with lithium-ion battery packs, weighs 45 pounds, and has enough juice to run for six hours of continuous walking. While he wouldn't give us an exact price, he said they're shooting for $100,000, and will be "very competitive" with other devices on the market. Following clinical trials, the exoskeleton will be available to select medical centers in July or August, though Bender also said the company's also working on a streamlined commercial version for all-day use, tentatively slated for 2013. Microsoft and Adobe CEOs meet, purportely plan world domination

Like any two technology behemoths, Adobe and Microsoft have certainly had their ups and downs. But now that Google and Apple are looming over them in a number of ways, it seems as if the two may be courting one another in order to help re-level the playing field. According to a New York Times report -- which was crafted after collecting reports from "employees and consultants to the companies who were involved in the discussions that took place" -- Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen recently met at the latter's headquarters for a closed-door meeting. Purportedly, the meeting went on for over an hour and covered a variety of topics, with one of 'em being Apple and its newfound dominance in the mobile market. Shockingly enough, a "possible acquisition of Adobe by Microsoft were among the options" of stopping the skyrocketing growth. The report accurately notes that such a deal makes entirely more sense now that Redmond isn't exactly the 800 pound gorilla that it was before Android and iOS hit the mainstream, though details beyond these assumptions were few and far betwixt. Whatever happens, no one can blame Steve Jobs for not giving Adobe every possible reason to hit Apple with everything it's got -- even if that involves buddying up with Ballmer and co.Microsoft and Adobe CEOs meet, purportely plan world domination originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 Oct 2010 16:31:00 EDT. Fillerati is a wonderful generator for filler text

Slick, sexy and suave are just some of the adjectives that came to mind when I was testing Fillerati. This beautiful little toy is a testament to what one developer can do with modern Web technologies in just 48 hours.
Functionally, it's very simple. Instead of generating Lorem Ipsum text for testing your new website or software, it lets you use excerpts from the works of famous (and long-dead) authors such as Edgar Rice Burroughs, H. G. Wells, and others.
After you specify an author, you can specify which specific work you'd like to draw the text from. Some authors have just a single work available, but Burroughs has two, so I suspect that this one feature was added strictly in his honor (or maybe Fillerati's creator plans to add more works, although I doubt it).
Once you select where to draw the text from, you can specify what HTML elements you'd like the tool to produce. You can create paragraphs, headings (anything from h1 to h6), unordered list items, or just plain text.
You then move your mouse along the slider to decide how much text you'd like to create. The one thing I don't like about this design is the fixed location of the bubble showing how much text you've created. Still, there is a nice little indicator on the slider that shows your current position. Once you're set, click once, and your clipboard will be populated with the test text that you've generated.
If only all Web tools were this graceful!Fillerati is a wonderful generator for filler text originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 04 Oct 2010 16:52:00 EST. T-Mobile G2 review

It's been a long road to the T-Mobile G2 (and this review). Just two years ago, Android made its entrance into the smartphone market with the G1, a partnership with the fourth-place carrier, and a lot of promises about keeping things open. Since then we've seen the likes of the Droid family, Google's Nexus One, and the powerhouses that are the Samsung Galaxy S line -- to name a few. Yes, the Android landscape has become more than just a little crowded. But of those many, there are few who leap beyond what we've come to expect from the Google-backed enterprise into the realm of the top tier. For all the Android devices you can purchase, only a few rise above the noise. At a glance, the G2 looks like one of those handsets -- designed and manufactured by HTC (and known as the Desire Z in Europe), outfitted with a (nearly) stock build of Android 2.2, and equipped with T-Mobile's new HSPA+, which the carrier claims can offer network speeds nearly equivalent to 4G. So is the G2 the sum of its parts -- the pure Android experience you've been waiting for -- or does it fall short of the hype? Find out below in the full Engadget review!

Qualcomm launches augmented reality SDK in beta form, ready to rock your Android devices

By now you would've come across at least a handful of inspiring augmented reality apps (with a few exceptions, perhaps), and if you fancy having a go at coding one yourself, Qualcomm may be able to assist. Today, the giant chip maker is pushing out a beta release of its Android AR SDK, which has produced interesting demos like the digital photo frame concept showcased in London last month, as well as the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots game pictured above. In fact, Mattel's so confident with the latter app that it's planning on commercializing it, so who knows -- you could be the next Peter Molyneux of the AR scene, or at least a winner of up to $125,000 from Qualcomm's AR Developer Challenge. It's a bit hard to believe, but it's only been one short year since Microsoft introduced Security Essentials to the world. So, how do you celebrate the first birthday of an anti-malware app that is loved by tens of millions of users? With a cake and a couple of blog posts, of course!

Over at the Windows Team Blog, they're focused on numbers -- here are few key ones:

30 million users in 74 countries
366 million threats removed
Three certifications (ICSA, West Coast Labs, and AV-Test)

Skype lands Cisco's Tony Bates as new CEO

It may sound fairly bland on paper, but the potential implications here are notable. Tony Bates, who was seen as a major player within Cisco reporting directly to CEO John Chambers, has just left to take over the CEO role at Skype. Cisco's own blog affirmed that Bates was leaving "to pursue another opportunity," and The New York Times has it that Joshua Silverman is stepping aside to make room for Mr. Bates. He'll arrive just in time to make a serious push for an IPO, grab more profit from its blossoming user base (which largely doesn't pay anything to make Skype-to-Skype calls) and possibly "make a deeper push into carrier and enterprise markets," as GigaOM puts it. Frankly, we'd be interested in seeing if any leftover synergies (yeah, we said it) could lead to a Skype-enabled Flip Video camcorder. Bates would obviously have great contacts with Cisco in order to make it happen, and honestly, it'd be a win-win for both parties. Crazier things have happened, right?Continue reading Skype lands Cisco's Tony Bates as new CEOSkype lands Cisco's Tony Bates as new CEO originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 04 Oct 2010 15:24:00 EDT. HP Windows 7 Slate Video Suggests Trainwreck in Making

Hewlett-Packard's tablet aspirations might be in very, very big trouble--and along with it, Microsoft's hopes for making a dent in the tablet market.
Take a look at the following YouTube video, which comes courtesy of the curiously named "x313xkillax."

If that's really a prototype of the upcoming HP Slate running Windows 7, and if it's anything close to the finished product, then they might as well stamp "R.M.S. Titanic" on the side. Why include a "CTRL-ALT-DEL" button on the device's chassis unless you expect the software to crash on a regular basis? What's with having a mechanical button to activate a virtual onscreen keyboard? And yes, the device seems to Web-surf pretty quickly, but an unmodified version of Windows 7 on a small touch screen translates into icons roughly the size of theoretical particles: You better have a stylus or small fingers.
We're not even going to talk about how it takes 25 seconds to boot.
During July's Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference, HP's Todd Bradley was quoted as saying, "Our focus is working with our still largest software partner, Microsoft, to create a tablet for the enterprise business." This was relatively soon after HP acquired Palm, whose WebOS is widely expected to appear on the company's consumer-oriented tablets.
If this video actually shows a near-final HP Slate in action, then I can only assume that HP is pouring resources into the WebOS version of the tablet, and neglecting the development of the Windows 7 counterpart--leaving it to die, in other words, while they leverage their Palm acquisition to its fullest extent. Either that, or else HP assumes that businesses will simply buy anything, provided there's enough sales muscle behind it.
Although Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said repeatedly that his company intends to triumph in the tablet arena, it's been an open question whether Windows will be modified to run on the form factor. Some might argue that Windows 7 came with touch-screen capabilities baked into the code, and that all Microsoft needs to do is find a manufacturing partner willing to design a truly kick-ass piece of hardware.
But Google Android and Apple's iOS4 have both demonstrated the better utility of a smartphone-like OS on a tablet; if I were Microsoft, I'd give serious thought to importing Windows Phone 7's user interface onto the form factor, and discarding entirely this albatross of an idea that Windows 7 can run perfectly on anything with a processor and a screen. It can't.
And if this supposed HP prototype is the shape of things to come, everybody's going to learn that the hard way.

Defend Yourself is a quick HTML5-powered Time-Waster

Defend Yourself is a basic tower defense style game. You have a cannon at the bottom of the screen, and balls are dropping from the top of the screen -- blast away and deflect the oncoming balls in order to keep them from touching down at the base of the screen.
You don't have infinite ammo. There's an ammunition bar that runs out as you fire, and you need to pause every now and then to let it recharge (recharging is actually fairly speedy). As with any tower defense game, the oncoming enemies get quicker and tougher until you lose.
What's interesting to me is that there are no explosions or fancy graphics, but the game is still fun to play and it ran incredibly smoothly on my Chrome Canary. My score isn't all that impressive, so feel free to show off in the comments by posting screenshots of your final score!

HTC Mondrian poses for press shots?

German site BestBoyZ has delivered a string of HTC leaks in recent weeks, and the latest is a fairly legit-looking handful of alleged press shots of the Mondrian. As a refresher, the Mondrian seems to be one of the many code and commercial names floating around for Windows Phone 7-based devices HTC is looking to ship at or very near to the platform's retail launch, a higher-end unit (possibly equipped with a 1.3GHz Snapdragon) that would probably hang in the same space as the rumored HD7 and Trophy. Interestingly, the shots -- which show a unit with a German ROM -- have HTC Hub listed on the home screen, despite some recent talk by CEO Peter Chou that his company's first-gen WinPho 7 products would lack serious software customization. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on how much you appreciate HTC's design team, we suppose.HTC Mondrian poses for press shots? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 20:47:00 EDT. Google Docs now features a color-coded revision history and better time stamps

New documents created with Google Docs will now make use of a much-improved revision history.

This new tool replaces one of the worst and most-clunky features of Google Docs -- and it's about time. By default, the interface clumps revisions together, so that large documents aren't completely unreadable (but you can click 'Show more detailed revisions' to see every revision.) Timestamping of revisions is now much clearer, and enabled even for very old document changes.

The blog post says there's more to come, too. Jabra Go 660 Bluetooth headset 'solution' pairs an Extreme with a USB adapter

Jabra certainly loves to trumpet the noise cancellation abilities of its Bluetooth headsets, and while our own experiences haven't quite lived up to the hype, we always look forward to the company's latest name for its noise cancellation tech. Disappointing, then, that the new Jabra Go 660 "headset solution" (with its Extreme ear jewelry) is said to be the company's "first Bluetooth headset with Noise Blackout Extreme." That's despite the Stone shipping with tech that went by the same name this time last year. Hopefully that system has been improved since then and will now actually live up to its name, putting background noise in a headlock and rendering it completely unconscious. In addition to the headset you get a USB Bluetooth adapter for a computer so that you can quickly go from VOIP to voicemail. The Go 660 is available now for $110, including the adapter -- which of course you won't need if your system is already down with the Bluetooth.Continue reading Jabra Go 660 Bluetooth headset 'solution' pairs an Extreme with a USB adapterJabra Go 660 Bluetooth headset 'solution' pairs an Extreme with a USB adapter originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 14:59:00 EDT. Bing Passes Yahoo but Lags Behind Google: Nielsen

Did Bing just overrun Yahoo to become the second-ranked search engine in the United States? New data from analytics firm Nielsen certainly suggests that's the case, estimating Bing's August market share at 13.9 percent and Yahoo's at 13.1 percent. Google maintains pole position in the race, with 65 percent."In terms of a year-over-year comparison, Google has seen little change in its share of search while Yahoo has seen a small but steady decline," reads Nielsen's Sept. 14 blog posting on the matter. "MSN/Windows Live/Bing's share has grown from 10.7 percent in August 2009 to 13.9 percent (a delta increase of 3.2 percent or a relative increase of 30 percent)."According to Nielsen's posting, that data's based only on user-generated search queries; things like contextual searches, hovers and in-text searches are left out of the final reckoning.Contrast Nielsen's data with last month's findings from analytics firm Experian Hitwise, which pegged Bing's U.S. market share at 9.86 percent, behind Yahoo at 14.43 percent and Google at 71.43 percent. Other analysts, notably Youssef Squali over at Jefferies & Co., have suggested that Bing's market-share rise is beginning to level off.Numbers notwithstanding, Yahoo's officially out of the U.S. search-engine game, with Bing powering its back-end search under the terms of a 10-year agreement with Microsoft. Absorbing Yahoo's market share gives Bing a combined 27-30 percent against Google's 65-71 percent (depending on which firm's data you use). Sure, Yahoo has been making a multimillion-dollar effort to show its continued viability as a Web property--including a massive ad campaign and some new features for its traditional offerings--but Microsoft has also been taking steps (such as Bing's Entertainment tab, and the Office Web Apps available via Live) to remake itself into more of a Web destination.I wouldn't say that Yahoo's finished as a viable online entity--it's certainly not an AOL-style zombie quite yet--but its late-2009 campaign to reclaim the public's mind-share seems to have had little impact. In any case, Nielsen's new numbers reiterate that U.S. search is now firmly a two-player game--although Bing has a long way to go if it wants to actually threaten Google's current dominance.

Fujitsu K supercomputer will do 10 petaflops in 2012, eat Crays for breakfast

10's a nice round number, isn't it? Round, yes, but also wildly impressive when you put the word "petaflops" behind it as Fujitsu has done with its upcoming K supercomputer, which will be able to crunch through 10 quadrillion operations every second. Compare that to the current champ of processing farms, Cray's Jaguar, which can handle only (only!) 1.75 petaflops of workload and you'll know that we're talking about a seminal leap in performance. Japan's Riken Research Institute is the fortunate addressee on the crates of ultrafast SPARC64 VIIIfx processors that Fujitsu is now shipping out and the current plan is to have everything up and running by 2012. In total, there'll be 80,000 CPUs, each possessing 8 cores running at 2.2GHz, which will be housed within 800 racks. So yes, there'll be a machine somewhere on the Japanese isle with 640,000 processing cores at its disposal. FCC: white space devices won't require spectrum sensing modules

Phew. For a moment few years there, we thought any device set up to operate on these so-called white spaces -- which have been vacated following the analog-to-digital TV transition -- would be forced to use spectrum sensing modules in order to ensure that no TV station was operating in areas in which it wanted to. Based on the FCC's Second Memorandum Opinion and Order, which was just published a few days back, it looks as if forthcoming white space devices will not be required to ping databases in order to make absolutely sure that it won't interfere with TV stations.

That's the long and short of it, which is fantastic (if not expected) news for device makers and anyone who despises red tape, but Ars Technica has taken an in-depth look at why the Commission made such a call. Indeed, the FCC's 2008 Order mandated that white space gadgets check in beforehand in order to "protect TV signals from interference." Essentially, the call that nixed this addition was the fact that this security ring would inadvertently provide "many wireless microphones systems that go to unlicensed use" -- things like wireless systems at churches, football games, concerts, etc. As with anything FCC-related, it's a long and wordy explanation, but those interested in the finer details are just one click away from the nitty-gritty.FCC: white space devices won't require spectrum sensing modules originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 19:17:00 EDT.
