HTC Mondrian poses for press shots?

German site BestBoyZ has delivered a string of HTC leaks in recent weeks, and the latest is a fairly legit-looking handful of alleged press shots of the Mondrian. As a refresher, the Mondrian seems to be one of the many code and commercial names floating around for Windows Phone 7-based devices HTC is looking to ship at or very near to the platform's retail launch, a higher-end unit (possibly equipped with a 1.3GHz Snapdragon) that would probably hang in the same space as the rumored HD7 and Trophy. Interestingly, the shots -- which show a unit with a German ROM -- have HTC Hub listed on the home screen, despite some recent talk by CEO Peter Chou that his company's first-gen WinPho 7 products would lack serious software customization. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on how much you appreciate HTC's design team, we suppose.HTC Mondrian poses for press shots? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 20:47:00 EDT. Google Docs now features a color-coded revision history and better time stamps

New documents created with Google Docs will now make use of a much-improved revision history.

This new tool replaces one of the worst and most-clunky features of Google Docs -- and it's about time. By default, the interface clumps revisions together, so that large documents aren't completely unreadable (but you can click 'Show more detailed revisions' to see every revision.) Timestamping of revisions is now much clearer, and enabled even for very old document changes.

The blog post says there's more to come, too. It's just a shame that it doesn't work with existing documents!Google Docs now features a color-coded revision history and better time stamps originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 10:00:00 EST. Jabra Go 660 Bluetooth headset 'solution' pairs an Extreme with a USB adapter

Jabra certainly loves to trumpet the noise cancellation abilities of its Bluetooth headsets, and while our own experiences haven't quite lived up to the hype, we always look forward to the company's latest name for its noise cancellation tech. Disappointing, then, that the new Jabra Go 660 "headset solution" (with its Extreme ear jewelry) is said to be the company's "first Bluetooth headset with Noise Blackout Extreme." That's despite the Stone shipping with tech that went by the same name this time last year. Hopefully that system has been improved since then and will now actually live up to its name, putting background noise in a headlock and rendering it completely unconscious. In addition to the headset you get a USB Bluetooth adapter for a computer so that you can quickly go from VOIP to voicemail. The Go 660 is available now for $110, including the adapter -- which of course you won't need if your system is already down with the Bluetooth.Continue reading Jabra Go 660 Bluetooth headset 'solution' pairs an Extreme with a USB adapterJabra Go 660 Bluetooth headset 'solution' pairs an Extreme with a USB adapter originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 14:59:00 EDT. Bing Passes Yahoo but Lags Behind Google: Nielsen

Did Bing just overrun Yahoo to become the second-ranked search engine in the United States? New data from analytics firm Nielsen certainly suggests that's the case, estimating Bing's August market share at 13.9 percent and Yahoo's at 13.1 percent. Google maintains pole position in the race, with 65 percent."In terms of a year-over-year comparison, Google has seen little change in its share of search while Yahoo has seen a small but steady decline," reads Nielsen's Sept. 14 blog posting on the matter. "MSN/Windows Live/Bing's share has grown from 10.7 percent in August 2009 to 13.9 percent (a delta increase of 3.2 percent or a relative increase of 30 percent)."According to Nielsen's posting, that data's based only on user-generated search queries; things like contextual searches, hovers and in-text searches are left out of the final reckoning.Contrast Nielsen's data with last month's findings from analytics firm Experian Hitwise, which pegged Bing's U.S. market share at 9.86 percent, behind Yahoo at 14.43 percent and Google at 71.43 percent. Other analysts, notably Youssef Squali over at Jefferies & Co., have suggested that Bing's market-share rise is beginning to level off.Numbers notwithstanding, Yahoo's officially out of the U.S. search-engine game, with Bing powering its back-end search under the terms of a 10-year agreement with Microsoft. Absorbing Yahoo's market share gives Bing a combined 27-30 percent against Google's 65-71 percent (depending on which firm's data you use). Sure, Yahoo has been making a multimillion-dollar effort to show its continued viability as a Web property--including a massive ad campaign and some new features for its traditional offerings--but Microsoft has also been taking steps (such as Bing's Entertainment tab, and the Office Web Apps available via Live) to remake itself into more of a Web destination.I wouldn't say that Yahoo's finished as a viable online entity--it's certainly not an AOL-style zombie quite yet--but its late-2009 campaign to reclaim the public's mind-share seems to have had little impact. In any case, Nielsen's new numbers reiterate that U.S. search is now firmly a two-player game--although Bing has a long way to go if it wants to actually threaten Google's current dominance.

Fujitsu K supercomputer will do 10 petaflops in 2012, eat Crays for breakfast

10's a nice round number, isn't it? Round, yes, but also wildly impressive when you put the word "petaflops" behind it as Fujitsu has done with its upcoming K supercomputer, which will be able to crunch through 10 quadrillion operations every second. Compare that to the current champ of processing farms, Cray's Jaguar, which can handle only (only!) 1.75 petaflops of workload and you'll know that we're talking about a seminal leap in performance. Japan's Riken Research Institute is the fortunate addressee on the crates of ultrafast SPARC64 VIIIfx processors that Fujitsu is now shipping out and the current plan is to have everything up and running by 2012. In total, there'll be 80,000 CPUs, each possessing 8 cores running at 2.2GHz, which will be housed within 800 racks. So yes, there'll be a machine somewhere on the Japanese isle with 640,000 processing cores at its disposal. FCC: white space devices won't require spectrum sensing modules

Phew. For a moment few years there, we thought any device set up to operate on these so-called white spaces -- which have been vacated following the analog-to-digital TV transition -- would be forced to use spectrum sensing modules in order to ensure that no TV station was operating in areas in which it wanted to. Based on the FCC's Second Memorandum Opinion and Order, which was just published a few days back, it looks as if forthcoming white space devices will not be required to ping databases in order to make absolutely sure that it won't interfere with TV stations.

That's the long and short of it, which is fantastic (if not expected) news for device makers and anyone who despises red tape, but Ars Technica has taken an in-depth look at why the Commission made such a call. Indeed, the FCC's 2008 Order mandated that white space gadgets check in beforehand in order to "protect TV signals from interference." Essentially, the call that nixed this addition was the fact that this security ring would inadvertently provide "many wireless microphones systems that go to unlicensed use" -- things like wireless systems at churches, football games, concerts, etc. As with anything FCC-related, it's a long and wordy explanation, but those interested in the finer details are just one click away from the nitty-gritty.FCC: white space devices won't require spectrum sensing modules originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 19:17:00 EDT. CEO Jeff Zucker leaving NBC following Comcast merger, exit stage left

Comcast's acquisition of NBC isn't quite in the bank just yet, but that doesn't mean the upcoming change isn't already dealing an impact. Current CEO and President Jeff Zucker announced today he plans to leave the company sometime following the takeover -- but also noting his final day might not be for another six months from now. "Comcast will be a great new steward, just as GE has been, and they deserve the chance to implement their own vision," he said. We wonder what exactly that new vision might be and how it pertains to the shift in online offerings -- for his part, Zucker's made a few headlines over the years that seem to suggest hesitation / aversion to the current digital transition. No successor has been named, but again, that could very well be half a year away -- as they say, stay tuned.

Update: And now it gets juicy. The New York Times is reporting that Zucker's departure wasn't exactly his call. Huawei breaks DSL speed barrier with 700Mbps prototype

DSL cables might not really be the sexiest thing in networking anymore, but what they are is ubiquitous, so let's not begrudge Huawei its feat here. The Chinese telecoms facilitator has shown off a new prototype that can pump 700Mbps of data across a 400-meter expanse. This is done by bundling four twisted pairs of copper wire together and sprinkling in some fairy dust to make them communicate at 175Mbps each. The clever bit here is in how crosstalk and interference are minimized, and Huawei claims a 75 percent improvement in bandwidth as a result. An immediate opportunity for these new cables will be, ironically, with fiber rollouts, as they could serve as the last connection between fiber hubs and your home. Then again, with Google and Chattanooga already looking at 1Gbps lanes, maybe the day of the copper wire has already passed?Continue reading Huawei breaks DSL speed barrier with 700Mbps prototypeHuawei breaks DSL speed barrier with 700Mbps prototype originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:17:00 EDT. That seems like odd phrasing considering that we've already seen HTC devices in the wild running bits and pieces of Sense on WP7, so we tend to believe Chou might have a more thorough, comprehensive experience in mind -- something that Microsoft is pushing back on (for now, anyway) by demanding that UI innovation be sandboxed in some pretty significant ways.

In the same conversation, Chou mentioned that they'll be releasing an LTE phone in 2011, though he didn't give any details on design, platform, or carrier. MetroPCS, AT&T, and Verizon will all have fragments of their 4G networks live in 2011, and at least two of those three seem likely candidates to take delivery of some early LTE hardware from the big boys like HTC. For what it's worth, HTC already delivered the first WiMAX phone in the States -- the EVO 4G, of course -- so it comes as little surprise that they'd be looking to make a splash with LTE as well.HTC CEO: 'initially, we don't have time' to put Sense on Windows Phone 7 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 15:52:00 EDT. Windows Phone 7 to start on GSM, then CDMA in 2011

Windows Phone 7 devices coming this fall will initially work with GSM carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile, but will not include carriers of CDMA technology, which include Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel. "Microsoft chose to focus on delivering a great GSM version to the world first, and then a great CDMA version in the first half of 2011," a Microsoft spokesman said Friday.SUN MICROSYSTEMS STANDARD MICROSYSTEMS SRA INTERNATIONAL SPSS SPANSION

RED shows off some EPIC HDRx test footage

That's EPIC, mind you, not necessarily epic. Sure, Red's experiment in HDR video looks like it'll be a help to filmmakers that want the power / flexibility of RAW in post and some tools to war against motion blur, but so far they aren't showing any of that ultra-surreal HDR stuff we known so well from Flickr. What's that you say? You don't want all your videos to look like they're populated by radioactive creatures on a planet with a dying sun? You disappoint us, person. Go to your room. EPIC can shoot up to 18 stops of dynamic range in motion, with an "HDR" mode for in camera processing and an "HDRx" mode (seen here) for manipulation in post. Hit up the source link for the full res download and in-depth discussion about the tech, or hit below the fold for an embedded copy of the vid.

Apple Tablet Is Coming, Whether We Need It or Not

Internet detectives are dredging up details around Apple's tablet computer. The Wall Street Journal noted the device aims to change the personal computing experience. HTC director confirms Windows Phone 7 phones launching next month

It's unclear whether the dude was speaking out of turn, but an HTC regional director responsible for North Africa and the Middle East has gone on record with gulfnews saying on no uncertain terms that the company "will be launching Windows Phone 7 handsets next month." Of course, that lines up nicely with just about everything we've been hearing lately -- not to mention the torrent of HTC-specific leaks we've seen -- and if true, it gives Microsoft a pretty generous buffer ahead of its holiday 2010 guidance for the platform's commercial release. He goes on to say that HTC will be releasing "around five more models by end of the year," though it's not clear how that mix will fall between Android, Windows Phone 7, and possibly even Brew MP; the Desire HD and Desire Z seem like a nice way to close out the year on the Android side of things if you ask us, which leaves plenty of room for awesome WinPho hardware. Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-Cell is an E-lectric limited production vehicle

Here's what you could be driving... if only you lived in Europe. Mercedes-Benz has announced, and promptly sold, a limited production run of 500 electric A-Class hatchbacks. Bearing the same E-Cell designation as the somewhat tastier-looking SLS model from the Deutsch automaker, this little goer squeezes 95 horsepower and a 93mph top speed out of a 70kW motor. Those are relatively humble specs, but they also mean the electrified A-Class can last a healthy 124 miles between recharges. So long as this thing doesn't go all Tata Nano on us -- and Mercedes says its thermomanagement is top notch -- we wouldn't mind seeing a few more electro hatchbacks rolling off the assembly line and maybe even reaching markets outside the present France, Germany and Netherlands. Intel Hedges On USB 3, Plans To Integrate Feature in 2012

USB 3.0 has been a popular feature ever since its introduction ~12 months ago, but a recent disclosure from Intel could slow the standard's march towards ubiquity. This doesn't bode well for anyone hoping to buy an Intel platform that supports much in the way of upgrades. PlayStation Move gets broken down -- so easy, an end-user could do it

Another week, another well-detailed tear down from the kids at iFixit. Blessed with an eight out of ten on the repairability index, the PlayStation Move was said to be one of the easiest devices yet to break down and reassemble, so there's a good chance that any novice DIYer with a steady hand and a Phillips screwdriver could accomplish what's shown in the link below. No huge surprises were found once the PCB's clothing was removed, but we were told that the Move controller contains a great many components that are found in today's modern smartphones: a processor, accelerometer, gyroscope, Bluetooth transmitter, vibrating motor, and even a MEMS compass. The sphere at the top can flash any color thanks to the included LEDs, and the integrated Li-ion battery can be disconnected (and thus, replaced) from the device without any soldering. Hit the source for the nitty-gritty, and hop on past the break for the highlights. Oh, and as a reminder, you can grab your own Move starting today if you call North America home.Continue reading PlayStation Move gets broken down -- so easy, an end-user could do itPlayStation Move gets broken down -- so easy, an end-user could do it originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 19 Sep 2010 22:55:00 EDT.
