Mobile security: Your smartphone is safer than your PC, for now

In security circles, the talk on mobile centers around mobile management, protecting access to and use of corporate information by smartphone users. This summer's iOS 4 has been a game-changer for most IT organizations, giving the Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch security capabilities equivalent to those of Windows Mobile and meeting the needs of most BlackBerry users, ending the main objection at many companies for allowing iOS devices in.INGRAM MICRO INFORMATICA INFOCUS IMS HEALTH IMATION .

Windows Phone 7 Web browser comparison versus iPhone and Android (video)

Filed under: Windows Mobile, Microsoft, Browsers, Mobile

No, sadly it's not my video (whose accent do you prefer, incidentally? The squeaky American, or mine?) but still, it's a great early look at the browsing experience on Windows Phone 7.

Lee really likes the tabs (those close buttons look fiddly though). I like the Metro UI, and the ability to add favourite pages to the Start screen. Froyo looks like a crusty donkey in comparison -- and iOS4 even manages to look a bit bland. I never thought I'd see a Microsoft product on the bleeding edge of user interface design...

Microsoft's new mobile OS is all but finished now, incidentally. The final release of its developer tools comes on September 16th (one day after the IE9 beta!), and handsets should be out in the wild by October. Did you see the list of games that will be available at launch? Commence salivation.

Microsoft Launches PC vs. Mac Website

Remember Apple's "Get A Mac" ads? They featured Justin Long as a Mac, and John Hodgman as a PC. Throughout a variety of 30-second spots, Mac demonstrated his superiority over fussy, buggy, increasingly frustrated PC:

During the late and unlamented Windows Vista era, those ads forced Microsoft on the defensive; not until the economic recession compelled PC buyers to give serious thought to cheaper devices (allowing Microsoft to score points with a series of ads emphasizing PCs' ostensible cost-effectiveness), and Windows 7 negated many of the arguments about buggy Microsoft operating systems, did Redmond seem to find its public footing again. The last few "Get A Mac" ads, one of which tried to launch a broadside at Windows 7, were also the series' weakest:

Now Microsoft's reviving that old rivalry somewhat, with its PC vs. Mac Website. Some of the information presented here is accurate: Windows PCs really do have more gaming options than Macs, and there are some security advantages.

In other areas, however, Microsoft's arguments are more subjective. "While some may say Macs are easy, the reality is that they can come with a learning curve," insists one section. "PCs running Windows 7 look and work more like the computers you're familiar with, so you can get up and running quickly."

There are obvious differences between the respective user interfaces of Mac OS X and Windows 7, but anyone who uses one can learn the other fairly quickly. Does it take time? Sure. But I've also known technologically inept individuals who, having spent their working lives on Windows machines, were able to make the leap to Mac versatility in an afternoon. I use both operating systems, often side by side, for hours a day; the differences aren't even close to insurmountably vast.

That aside, Microsoft shoots itself in the foot when it comes to the Website's Compatibility section. "Apple's productivity suite file formats won't open in Microsoft Office on PCs," this part claims. "This can be a real hassle for Mac users sharing work documents with PC users."

I suppose that was true a decade ago. And maybe iWork has some compatibility issues, despite Apple's insistence to the contrary, but I also don't know a single Mac user who relies on it; everyone in that category uses either Office for Mac or Google Docs. By suggesting that documents created on a Mac are incompatible with a PC, Microsoft seems to be implicitly denigrating its own work in creating Apple software--but given how the company stands to profit more if someone purchases a Windows 7-equipped PC, as opposed to a Mac running Office, I'm sure that position was regarded as the lesser of two corporate evils.

In its public-facing communications, Microsoft likes to emphasize how consumers have a choice. For its part, Apple has a Webpage where it touts the benefits of Macs over PCs. Either way, I'm happy to see the discourse between the two companies has elevated itself above a kindergarten level.

Sony's LocationPorter real-time video transmission system goes multichannel

Back in February of 2009, the launch of Sony's LocationPorter RVT-SD100 suggest that the days of needing a tricked out news van to transmit real-time on the scene video could be a thing of the past -- that is, if you had a spare $18k lying around and a solid 3G data connection. The newly-announced RVT-SD200 and its companion RVT-MR200 expands upon that dream by enabling up to 12 LocationPorters to transmit images to one single receiver. Besides paving the way for armies of techno box-toting reporters -- like the one pictured above -- to relay news as it happens, Sony also sees the potential for emergency services like police forces and fire departments to make use of the equipment to relay critical information. We could see that too, but if this new system is priced at anything like the old, we're betting tight public budgets won't make it happen. Then again we can't speak for the Sultan of Brunei's security force.Sony's LocationPorter real-time video transmission system goes multichannel originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 29 Aug 2010 01:42:00 EDT. Entelligence: when less beats Moore

Entelligence is a column by technology strategist and author Michael Gartenberg, a man whose desire for a delicious cup of coffee and a quality New York bagel is dwarfed only by his passion for tech. In these articles, he'll explore where our industry is and where it's going -- on both micro and macro levels -- with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.

We are all familiar with Moore's law. The observation made by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore that the density of semiconductors doubles roughly every eighteen months. The net result? It's always going to be better faster and cheaper. Certainly that's been true of the phone space, with large screens, fast processors and lots of storage.

In the last few weeks alone I've looked at new phones with 1Ghz processors, the latest and greatest software platforms from Google and RIM... but it's been one little gadget that's caught my attention and it totally bucks the trend. What device? It's the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro -- which is a lot of name for a small phone -- and it shows some very different thinking about what a smartphone is. In theory, this isn't a phone that I should like. Instead of a large 4.3-inch screen, it's running a 2.55-inch screen at 240 x 320 resolution. Don't look for a 1Ghz processor here. It's got an ARMv6 revision 5 processor at 600Mhz. Finally, forget Froyo or even Eclair. This thing's got Android 1.6 on it and may never get updated to the latest and greatest. Despite all that, I think Sony Ericsson has a potential hit on their hands if they decide to bring this to the US later this year as they said they plan to. Why am I so enamored?Continue reading Entelligence: when less beats MooreEntelligence: when less beats Moore originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 17:08:00 EDT. Dual SIM iPhone 4 case gives your multiple personality disorder a new lease on life

Sure, there are any number of phones with dual SIM card slots, most of them built for Asian markets, but the iPhone 4 is about the furthest thing from dual SIM: in fact, it doesn't even have one Big Person SIM to call its own. Luckily, USBFever has a hacktastic solution to this problem (a followup to their iPhone 3G version), with a new $30 case that can host dual full size SIM cards on the back of an iPhone 4 (entombed in some classy clear plastic, naturally), while running an adapter to the iPhone 4's micro SIM slot. You can then switch between the two SIMs from the iPhone's own settings menu, though unfortunately you can't rock both SIMs simultaneously. Looking for a more DIY approach? Researchers set new record for ferroelectric data storage

Ferroelectric isn't just a ridiculously fun word to say, it might just also be the future of computing. While that possibility is still a ways off, researchers have been making considerable progress in recent years, and a team from Japan's Tohoku University has now set a new record for ferroelectric data storage. That was accomplished with the aid of a scanning nonlinear dielectric microscope, which allowed the researchers to hit a data density of 4 trillion bits per square inch. As you might expect, the exact process is a bit complicated -- involving a pulse generator that's used to alter the electrical state of tiny dots on the ferroelectric medium -- but the researchers say that the technology is a leading candidate to replace magnetic hard drives and flash memory, or "at least in applications for which extremely high data density and small physical volume is required." Unfortunately, they aren't going so far as to speculate when that might happen.Researchers set new record for ferroelectric data storage originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 28 Aug 2010 02:28:00 EDT. Fennec (a.k.a. Firefox Mobile) goes alpha for Android and Nokia N900

Well, it looks like you can finally get rid of that less-than-stable pre-alpha release of Fennec (a.k.a. The big news with this release is an increase in "performance and responsiveness to user actions" (always a good thing), as well as two new features dubbed "Electrolysis" and "Layers," the former of which lets the browser interface run in a separate process from the one rendering web content, while the latter promises to "greatly improve performance in graphic intensive actions like scrolling, zooming, animations and video." You'll also get full support for add-ons, and Firefox Sync built into the browser to let you have a continuous experience as you move between devices. Patent Suit Day Continues: Microsoft Takes Fight With i4i Over XML To The Supreme Court

While not the biggest Microsoft-related lawsuit news of the day, Microsoft just announced that it'll be taking its patent infringement case against Canadian technology firm i4i to the highest level, the US Supreme Court.

Last August a federal court of appeals upheld the decision of a lower court that Microsoft had in fact infringed i4i's XML patent ('449), by introducing Microsoft WORD in 2003 and continuing the XML editing capabilities through 2007. Microsoft was ordered to pay i4i $290 million dollars in fees and change the disputed version of Word.UNISYS TRIQUINT SEMICONDUCTOR TRIMBLE NAVIGATION LIMITED TRIDENT MICROSYSTEMS TRANSACTION SYSTEMS ARCHITECTS

Dell dropping Windows Phone 7 devices from its roadmap? (update: Dell responds, is definitely still in the game)

Now we don't have much more to go on here than some analyst chatter and a lengthy article from TechCrunch, but if you believe what you read, a major player has just dropped Windows Phone 7 devices from its roadmap. And that player is Dell. According to Jonathan Goldberg, an telecom analyst at Deutsche Bank, the only remaining partners currently working on Windows Phone 7 handsets are HTC, Samsung, and LG. If this is true (and that's a big if), that means that the seriously awesome looking Dell Lightning that we spied in leaks recently will never see the light of day -- as a WP7 device, at least.

We already knew that HP was out of the game (instead focusing on webOS phones), but the casual suggestion that Dell has made for the door here is somewhat suspect. The company itself hasn't made any statements (we've reached out but have yet to hear back), and while Dell has certainly concentrated a lot of effort on Android devices recently, its partnership with Microsoft is long-standing (despite dabbling in the world of open source). If the story turns out to be true, it could spell mixed (if not outright bad) tidings for the Windows Phone 7 launch, which Goldberg alleges may cost Microsoft upwards of half a billion dollars -- no small fee. Losing two of the biggest computer-makers in the world can't feel very good when you're trying to fight your way back to relevancy, but at least on the bright side, neither HP nor Dell have a track record of making anything other than heroically mediocre handsets. Take this all with a grain of salt right now, however, as the author of the TechCrunch article provides no source for the statements from Goldberg, and... well, he's an analyst, and they're prone to making up all kinds of crazy things. We're investigating, and will let you know as soon as we have more info.

Update: We've been pinged back by Dell's Matt Parretta, and he was 100 percent clear that Dell was most certainly still part of the Windows Phone 7 game. In the company's words:
Any reports, or speculation, that report Dell will not support Windows Phone 7 are false... Microsoft announced Dell as a supporting partner at this year's Mobile World Congress and nothing's changed. We are excited to collaborate with Microsoft on Windows Phone 7, and are looking forward to bringing customers amazing mobile experiences.
Furthermore, the analyst in question here (Jonathan Goldberg) has also reached out to us to clarify his statements, saying that he believes Dell is still a partner on Windows Phone 7, just not a launch partner. Dell was mum on release schedules, but one thing is clear -- they intend to follow through on this collaboration.Dell dropping Windows Phone 7 devices from its roadmap? Windows Phone 7: DOA?

Microsoft didn't bother to send me one of the Windows Phone 7 prototypes they've been circulating to media over the past week--which is OK, because I had my hands full reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S--but I'm hoping they'll see the light over the next couple of days, if only so I can jump into the review fray.A lot of those reviews seem very polite. There's some praise for the Windows Phone 7 operating system, which attempts to aggregate Web content and applications into subject-specific Hubs, as opposed to arranging individual apps on a grid-like home screen. And then there's Galen Gruman, who basically went nuclear."Microsoft needs to kill Windows Phone 7 and avoid further embarrassing itself by shipping this throwback," Gruman wrote in a July 15 posting on InfoWorld's Mobile Edge blog. "It's not a question of whether Windows Phone 7 will fail--it will--but how long it will take Microsoft to admit the failure. For the company's sake, the earlier it fesses up, the better."According to Gruman, Windows Phone 7's sins include an "awkward and unsophisticated" UI that "recalls Microsoft's history of clunky design" and use of "inexcusably old technology" such as Internet Explorer 7. Microsoft, he says, has come up with "an imperfect copy of an old iPhone."Gruman predicts that Windows Phone 7 devices will find their way to the carriers' remainder bins by "in January 2011."I'm not so sure that's the case here. I haven't had the chance to dropkick a Windows Phone 7 device of my very own (you truly never know how well a smartphone can suit your needs until you test whether it can survive a stray boot), but I have seen it in action, in a very limited way. Based off that limited interaction, the user interface seemed intuitive, and certainly nothing like the iPhone circa 2007.The bigger question--and this will affect its rate of consumer adoption--is how versatile the UI proves in handling people's lives and apps. If it's a snap to add new apps, or update information for a particular Hub, then Windows Phone 7 could prove sticky in the marketplace. If it's a pain, then users will shy away.If anything's going to kill Windows Phone 7, it's the Windows Phone Marketplace. I've said this before: if third-party developers don't get onboard with their apps and games, then this platform will die--but that death will be gradual, certainly not the "$25 bin by President's Day" demise predicted by Gruman. At this point, the developer front seems a toss-up. On one hand, Microsoft is pushing very hard (and even offering cash, rumor has it) for developers to port their wares on Windows Phone 7. On the other, I've been hearing a lot of angry rumblings from Windows Mobile developers--who could be the natural core group for Phone 7 development--grumbling about how Microsoft's attempt at a smartphone "reset" has left them with a.) no easy upgrade path for their existing apps to the new platform, and b.) needing to adapt to the all-new requirements of building for Phone 7. And at least one of those developers is a pretty major-sized entity. So we shall see. If Microsoft mismanages the launch--I've listed some of the things they need to do to succeed, here--then they're in very big trouble. But I think they could have the platform to make it work, or at least halt their slide in smartphone market share. What do you all think?

SkyFire for iPhone To Be Submitted To Apple Next Week?

SkyFire. Heard of it? It's the smartphone browser that was chewing through Flash video and other rich media long before any of the built-in browsers were supporting such things -- and on a number of platforms, it's still the only option.

We've known that SkyFire Labs was crackin' away at an iPhone port for some time now -- the company confirmed it after Opera got a surprise App Store thumbs up. But when would it be done? More importantly, when would it be submitted for that oh-so-important stamp of approval?

Sony Ericsson Vivaz coming September 5th to AT&T

In the mood for a good Ma Bell camera phone (emphasis on the camera more than phone)? Sony Ericsson and AT&T have just now decided to bring the Symbian S60-packing Vivaz stateside, still touting a 720p autofocus HD video mode and a 8.1 megapixel camera. Price of entry is $80 on contract (after $50 mail-in rebate) and according to the press release will hit retail September 5th in Galaxy Blue -- or should you like a more specified celestial color, a Venus Ruby option will be offered online for a limited time. Just don't forget it's a resistive screen; lose the stylus or you'll be keeping a fingernail long for about two birthdays. Samsung Galaxy Tab gets official teaser video

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_gets_official_teaser_video'; Whoa, now we're talking. It's short, sweet, and dramatic, yet the official Samsung Galaxy Tab teaser video still manages to reveal a number of features previously only rumored. We've got Android 2.2 running on a 7-inch display, video calling, Swype, HD movie playback, "Flash support," GPS navigation, an e-reader, and plenty more. Now get ready to be teased mercilessly by the video embedded after the break -- it's as close as you'll get before the official reveal in Berlin (at IFA) on September 2nd. Yeah, we'll be there.

Update: here's a few other things we've noticed from the trailer. In addition to the aforementioned details, the floating text also references augmented reality and video calling (perhaps indicating a front-facing camera as well). Speaking of cameras, you'll notice in one shot what appears to be a LED flash bulb next to the camera. Must we really wait another 9 or so days? Switched On: Gluts and glory

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Before the mass adoption of smartphones in the U.S., many fretted that the heavy subsidization model was feeding a free handset model that would keep Americans hopelessly addicted to basic voice plans and phones optimized for them. The price consumers paid in relation to the value of the handset, it was argued, was hopelessly out of whack. This year, a string of successful smartphones have shown that an increasing percentage of U.S. consumers are willing to pay $200 for a flagship device. On the other hand, there's still ample evidence that price and value can remain disconnected. And the carriers aren't making it much easier.

The smartphone surge has been driven in part by a desire to acquire the best and by a response to carrier advertising. However, a recent run-up in advanced smartphones have made it difficult to define a clear top of the line at many carriers, and carriers simply cannot promote them all with the same attention lavished on the iPhone or original Droid. Take the turn of events at Verizon, for example, which in the space of a few months has rolled out the Droid Incredible, Droid X and Droid 2, with the Samsung Fascinate in the wings. At least the first three have been all priced at $199, with strong precedent for the Fascinate coming in at that level. And while AT&T has been a bit more diverse in the operating systems of its recent spate of high-end contenders -- the iPhone 4, BlackBerry Torch and Samsung Captivate -- they too have all been priced at $199.Continue reading Switched On: Gluts and glorySwitched On: Gluts and glory originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 21 Aug 2010 19:30:00 EDT. Apple iPhone Is Rising High in the Enterprise

Apple shipped 8.3 million units of its iPhone in Q1, helping the company to its $3.38 billion profit. Apple COO Tim Cook said on the Q1 earnings call Jan. 25 that business use of the iPhone doubled since the release of the faster iPhone 3GS last summer. Cook said roughly 70 percent of Fortune 100 companies are testing or using iPhones as their corporate communications device, thanks largely to support for Microsoft Exchange. This sets the stage for the iPhone's assault on RIM's BlackBerry, analysts believe. - Apple doubled in the first quarter the number of iPhones it sold in the first quarter from a year ago, shipping 8.3 million

Forget Ads In Books, Lit-Lovers Face An Even More Hideous Prospect

It?s a pity readers don?t want to pay for stories about the death of traditional media, because otherwise journalists and commentators would be riding a big fat cash cow.

In recent months it?s been impossible to open a newspaper or magazine without being drenched by a tidal wave of ?waaaaah?s and ?woah?s and ?oh my God we?re all doomed?s from those of us who make our living selling words. If it?s not newspapers - the fall of advertising! the rise of paywalls! the death of columnists! the birth of citizen journalists! - then it?s magazines - no more long-form writing! the iPad! - or movies - piracy! Netflix! - or cable news - Twitter! YouTube!

This week it?s books (again), and a stark warning from the Wall Street Journal?s Ron Adner and William Vincent to anyone who prefers literature unsullied by full-page ads for SUVs and tobacco.

?With e-reader prices dropping like a stone and major tech players jumping into the book retail business, what room is left for publishers' profits? The surprising answer: ads. They're coming soon to a book near you.?

Celebrating A Year Of Apple Pondering Google Voice

My, how quickly things change. It wasn't much more than a year ago that Apple and Google were happy partners ? at least from the public's perspective ? working in tandem to push technology forward at a clip pace. Google's search and various apps complimented the iPhone perfectly, and the existing Android phones merely affirmed how much better the iPhone was than everything else on the market. And then everything went to hell.

Late last July, we broke the news that Apple blocked Google's official Voice application and removed any third-party applications that supported the service, sparking an FCC inquiry into why Google Voice was banned from the iPhone. Today marks the one year anniversary of Apple's response to the FCC, in which it gave a remarkably disingenuous explanation as to why Google Voice wasn't on the iPhone: Apple was still "pondering" the matter. A year later, it apparently still is.

Pico projector camera concept is, as usual, better than the real thing

Oh, don't get us wrong, we rather enjoyed our time with Nikon's S1100pj projector camera, but this here Pico concept design is on a whole other level. We're talking both in terms of cuteness and inventiveness. You might have recognized by now that one of the Pico's "eyes" is the camera lens while the other is the projector, but what of the "smile?" Why, that's your microphone's sound intake port. And its little feet -- acting as a stabilizing stand when in projector mode -- also double up as covers for the external connection jacks. Masterful. T-Mobile G2 again, this time with less Mr. Blurrycam

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/T_Mobile_G2_in_the_wild';
So we just got a second batch of T-Mobile G2 shots dropped in our mailbox -- and this time, you can get a much better look at the inner workings of the carrier's version of the upcoming HTC Vision. Looks like this bad boy slides and tilts, which eliminates the need for a kickstand and is very likely causing you to breathe an audible sigh of relief right about now. Meanwhile, the backside reveals that HTC looks ready to really get into this asymmetrical design concept -- something we've definitely seen on the Schubert / Mozart -- and realistically, it's probably going to polarize some buyers. Check out the gallery for a few more shots!

Update: We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we've just been told that the G2 doesn't have a tilting screen, despite what you see up there -- it's just the inner workings of the slide being pulled up. Our hearts have been ripped from our chests on this one, rest assured.

WordPress for Android is the smoothest and most functional smartphone app I've ever used

Filed under: Blogging, AndroidI had actually intended to try out TweetDeck for Android today, but it turns out it only works on smartphones sporting Android 2.0 or newer. Thus, with my weak, little Android 1.6 phone I've been left out in the cold, tweetless and lonely. But hey, it ain't all bad: I've been playing with the official WordPress app instead, and damn it's good!

First things first, though: you'd have to be an utter buffoon to compose a proper, longer-than-140-character blog post using your mobile phone. That's not to say that the WordPress app doesn't feature a great New Post editor, but I can only recommend you use it if you're a masochist with tungsten carbide fingertips and precision-engineered reinforced tendons.

Fortunately the WordPress app offers a lot more than just the New Post editor. You can moderate and reply to comments, check your stats and even upload photos and videos straight from your camera!

In short, if you use use self-hosted WordPress.org installation, or a free blog available from WordPress.com, and you have an Android phone, you want this app.

If you still need convincing, read on!
After installing, the first thing you need to do is add a WordPress blog that you want to manage. Both the free WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress.org blogs can be added -- just type in your name and password. You can add more than one blog, too.

Each blog has a Preferences page, as you can see above. Actually, rather counter-intuitively, each blog has two separate pages; I have no idea why. The one you see above configures comment notifications, and the other lets your configure the size of your image uploads. Sadly I am Little Timmy No-Friends and no one left a comment on my blog today, so I couldn't test Notifications, but I'm sure they work!

Once you're added a blog, you can look at Comments, your Posts and Pages, and even the blog's Stats! Comments can be moderated, edited and replied to -- you can even 'mass moderate' using checkboxes (check the screenshot). To make a new post you click the '+' in the bottom left corner of the Posts tab. I don't know why it doesn't say 'New Post'... were the app developers trying to be cool? You can also edit and create static Pages, though you're probably not going to do that while on the move.

Finally we have the Stats tab! It looks just like the Web-based stats that you will have already seen many times on both WordPress.com and your self-hosted blog. Again, I can't see why you'd want to look at your stats while on the move -- to show at job interviews, perhaps? Incidentally, that high point on the graph was just after I joined Download Squad...

All in all, the Android WordPress app is excellent! The only issue I had was uploading photos directly from my phone's camera. It simply caused the app to crash -- and of course I lost my torturously-typed blog post in the process! Perhaps the photos were too big, or maybe it's a known bug. I'm sure it'll be fixed in due course.

WordPress for Android Tech Specs

Installed Size -- 1.3MB, but that could grow if you add more blogs
Speed/Responsiveness -- The app itself is very responsive. Posts, comments and pages take a while to download the first time you view them -- but they're a lot faster after that (Android 1.6 @ 600 MHz, LG GT 540 Swift)
User Interface -- The interface is probably the best I've ever had the pleasure of using, at least on smartphone. Bravo!
Configurability & Extensibility -- The app doesn't actually do a whole lot, so there isn't much to configure. I can't see any way in which the app can be extended, either
License -- Free and open-source, just like the blogging platform itself -- coders, get involved with the next version of the app!
